"One crys, two refuses to eat, three hangs herself" is how the Chinese describe
the 1,2,3 steps by which a young wife would protest. She found herself badly wronged but had no effective means to resist. Hence she chose an extreme mean.
The Australian man set himself on fire as a mean of protest is following the same
pattern. He was frustrated by his impotence to resist against a greater power despite
previous non-extremist protest(free speech). He therefor chose an extreme mean.

Free speech or non-extremist free speech is a reflection of relative power. An individual's
power against socially imposed power. Also between one society against other dominanant cultural and/or colonial powers internationally. All other things equal,
weak individuals are more likely to protest with extremist/deviant means. Weak societies are more likely to have their members protest with extremist/deviant means.

In general, free speech is as good a policy as a society/nation/culture is powerful. Such
society/nation/culture in general will have less of its members protesting with
    extremist/deviant means.
