Michigan State football has cut ties with a recruit accused of
trying to extort an underage girl who refused his advances,
school officials said in a statement on Friday.
The team said it had informed 18-year-old cornerback Steffan
Johnson that he “will not be a member of the Spartan program.”
Before Michigan State cut ties with Steffan Johnson, he had
originally planned to go to the team’s spring game.
Johnson, who signed with the squad in December, was recently
arrested in Florida for allegedly threatening to release video
of a past sexual encounter with a minor after she refused to
kiss him outside of her home, the Detroit Free Press has
reported.
The video was allegedly recorded when the victim was 15 and
Johnson was 17, according to a police report obtained by the
newspaper.
Johnson is accused of threatening to post the footage on social
media in an attempt to “injure the reputation” of the girl,
whose father contacted cops Wednesday, according to the
newspaper.
Johnson is charged with extortion and transmission of a sexual
performance by a child.
He has been released from custody after posting bond, online
records show.
