5 dead, including teen, multiple injured in separate shootings across NYC

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Fifteen people were shot in 10 separate incidents
across New York City on Monday. Five of them, including a 16-year-old,
have died.

Overall in the city, shootings are down about 24% compared to this point
last year.

The worst recent 1-day record of gun violence in the five boroughs was
July 5 of 2020 when 47 people were hit with bullets.

"The community needs to know, we are not sleeping on this, this keeps me
up at night," said Bronx Distict Attorney Darcel Clark.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson on the same page said more
resources, jobs and programs are needed in these neighborhoods.

She points out some of the shootings the most challenging are isolated incidents driven by gang violence.

"You don't own that corner, you don't won that projects," Gibson said.
"Yet conflicts with young people, there are families with victims attached
to that."

Gibson said that there's a real time solution in play for shootings that
aren't isolated incidents.

"We will see more police presume that's the immediate visual you will see
in this area," Gibson said.

Another part of this multi-pronged problem is the flow of guns into the
city officials promising to hold those accountable for their actions.

"It may not seem like it's working but it could be a lot worse if we
aren't doing the things we do," Clark said.

The last victim in the most recent rash of shootings was 56-year-old Kevin Roberts.

Investigators found Roberts sitting in a wheelchair with multiple gunshot wounds outside of an apartment building on Simpson Street in the Longwood section of the Bronx at around 11 p.m. No arrests have been made.

Friends said Roberts who they called Big Red was a fixture in the
neighborhood.

"I just don't understand why people are making that negotiation to deal
with their situation that way," Nadia Pabon said.

Brooklyn

A 16-year-old was shot and killed in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. It happened while the teen was standing across the street from
where he lived on Marcus Garvey Boulevard just before 6 p.m. Monday.

The motive of the shooting is unknown, and police are looking into whether
the 16-year-old was the intended target. Police have made no arrests.

Earlier that day, a 38-year-old man was shot in the foot at Nassau Street
near Gold Street in downtown Brooklyn. That victim is expected to survive.

The Bronx

Another fatal shooting in Longwood claimed the life of a 27-year-old, who
was fatally struck around 2:30 p.m. Officials found the victim on
Longfellow Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head.

"I just ran to him, just dropped everything applied pressure to his neck,
and I was just talking to him," a neighbor of the victim told Eyewitness
News.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown. An arrest has yet
to be made.

A similar scenario unfolded outside a bodega on White Plains Road in Williamsbridge, where a 48-year-old male was found with a gunshot wound to
the back.

EMS responded to the scene and transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.

Manhattan

In Harlem, a 38-year-old male was shot and killed outside 230 West 140th Street. No arrests have been made in that shooting as well.

An arrest is also pending in a shooting that took place a couple of miles
away in Washington Heights, where three women were shot in Riverbank State Park. All were struck in the legs and sustained non-life-threatening
injuries.

Police said none of the victims - ages 19, 20 and 28 - are believed to be
the intended targets. Officials are asking for the public's help in
obtaining any cell phone footage from the incident, which is said to have
taken place while many were gathered for an event at the park.

Staten Island

Gunfire also impacted Staten Island, where two people were shot near
Victory Boulevard and South Greenleaf Avnue. Those victims, an 18-year-old
male and 19-year-old female, are expected to survive. The suspects are described as four males who fled the scene in a vehicle.

Queens

Three men were shot in the Rockaways section of Queens near Beach Channel Drive. According to police, a 56-year-old was struck in the right arm, a 37-year-old in the torso, and 21-year-old in the buttocks. The victims
were taken to St. John's Episcopal Hospital in stable condition.

An investigation into each of these separate incidents is ongoing, with
the NYPD investigating exactly what led up to them.
