I am Brazilian and I never gambled in my entire life. I have at least 20 close friends who never gambled and I don't know any person with problems with gambling activities. Some people like to play cards once in a while, but no problems like your friends...
Maybe they are from a specific city with some gambling tendencies, I don't know. Please do not forget that Brazil is as big as the whole Europe and we
