In the preface to the collected writings of Goffredo Mameli (1850),
Giuseppe Mazzini wrote that, immediately after the proclamation of
    the Roman Republic, Mameli:

Di là mi scrisse un biglietto, riassunto eloquente della sua
fede, che non conteneva se non tre parole: "Roma! Repubblica!
Venite!" e la data del 9 febbraio. (From there he wrote me a
note, eloquent summary of his faith, which contained but three
words: "Rome! Republic! Come!" and the date of 9 February.)

Italiana, Vol. XVII (Gli Scrittori dell'Ottocento i Politici e i
Pensatori), Carlo Signorelli Editore, Milano (1926)]

Mazzini arrived in Rome on 5 March 1849, and he was appointed a
Triumvir on 29 March. He distinguished himself as Chief Minister
for the next three months. He resigned on 30 June when the defense
of Rome was no longer feasible. The patriot Mameli, the author of
the Italian national anthem, was wounded during the defense of Rome
and died because of poor medical care.
