Centralisation may hurt the fragile democracy
Myanmar's long-awaited 'economic policies' presented by
its veteran leader Aung San Suu Kyi recently in Naypyidaw
is worryingly light in its detail. Though the policies
were designed to bring change and uplift an economy badly
shattered by the junta rule since 1962, yet they simply
looked like a package of aspirations for one of the most
impoverished nations of South East Asia. Most of the
international observers rated these policies as
absolutely vague. Indeed Suu Kyi should have been better
prepared to roll them out in a much organised manner than
simply giving a sketch which can be disastrous for a
nation wherein her supporters and sympathisers were
expecting that 'she can fix all the problems of the
nation'. Her first problem appears to be that she has a
team which does not have experience of running public
offices so far. With a rubber stamp President in office,
she may be able to push most of the policies, but an
attempt to micromanage and centralise may derail the
efficiency of the new Government, finally leaving her
branded as a failed democratic leader in the history of
the nation. This might create a strong repercussion in
the public which has always held her so high and may help
the junta regaining its lost glory in a country where the
Army has always been revered as playing the role of a
patriot since the days of its freedom struggle from
Britain. . . .
