Indeed, we did fight the wrong enemy. The enemy all along was those orchestrating what is occurring right now. If only we had listened to

The U.S. Army and Marine Corps didn't fight the USSR, it was our ally in
the Second World War.
Patton was referring to Germany. You might be
saying that Patton thought we should have fought against the Soviet
Union instead of Germany, in which case you would be correctly
interpreting the statement attributed to him.
