Chinese Civil Rights Activist Chen Guangcheng Visits Office of Tibet in Washington DC
Chen Guangchen, one of the most prominent Chinese human rights activists, visited the Office of Tibet (OOT) based
in Washington DC on 9 August 2016. His wife Yuan Weijing accompanied him during the visit.
Mr Kaydor Aukartsang, the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, welcomed Mr Guangchen at the Office of
Tibet. The Representative expressed his pleasure at meeting the activist and thanked him for his sustained interest
and support towards the Tibet cause.
Mr Guangchen also expressed his pleasure and strongly emphasised the need to maintain continued outreach to the
Chinese public from the Tibetan administration and the people.
“When I was in China, information was strictly censored by the government, making it very difficult to hear anything
about Tibet. And whatever little we hear were all official propaganda, spewed by the Chinese government machinery.
We do not completely believe the official news provided by the government, yet at the same time, we don’t verify it as
well. As a result, Chinese public’s knowledge on Tibet is extremely limited. Therefore, it’s really important to reach out
to the Chinese public to provide factual information on Tibet,” he said.
He also expressed his good fortune to have met His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2012 and demonstrated a willingness
to visit the Central Tibetan Administration based in Dharamshala in the future.
He further explained the importance of clarifying the positions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people
whom the Chinese government labels ‘separatists’. He said the Chinese government’s lies should be exposed to the
Chinese public.
Mr Kunga Tashi, the Chinese liaison officer, explained the Middle Way Approach of the Central Tibetan Administration
to resolve the Tibet issue.
Chen Guangchen is a Chinese civil rights activist who shot into international limelight for organising a landmark class-
action lawsuit against authorities in Linyi, Shandong province, for the excessive enforcement of the one-child policy.
