An ape throwing a tantrum is still just an ape.

According to Australian newspaper The Herald Sun and its
cartoonist, Mark Knight, a cartoon of Serena Williams that
echoes the harmful caricatures of black men and women once drawn
in a shameful part of US history isn’t racist. It’s just that
we’re too sensitive over here in America and totally can’t take
    criticism about a sports star.

“The world has officially gone mad when a celebrated cartoonist
is condemned by the social media hordes for depicting a famous
sports star throwing an unedifying tantrum,” read one editorial
published in response to the outrage over the cartoon on Tuesday.

    @JamilSmith
This is Jim Crow-racist. He Sambo’d Serena Williams. I’m a bit
surprised that @Knightcartoons didn’t include a watermelon. For
those unfamiliar with the history invoked here, read about the
    coon caricature.

The editorial argued that the cartoon was merely another piece
from Knight that targeted the powerful. And, it argued, it’s a
fact that she threw a tantrum.

“In her straight sets loss to Naomi Osaka, Williams was simply
outplayed and lost her temper in a gigantic and ill-disciplined
    blow-up.

Mark Knight’s cartoon depicting Williams destroying her racquet
and jumping up and down, with a dummy spat nearby, mocked the
star player for her behaviour,” the editorial insisted.

The newspaper also posted a news story on the reaction to the
cartoon, arguing that it was mostly people outside of Australia
    who disapproved of it.

It appears they missed a few tweets – including one from their
country’s own beloved basketball player, Ben Simmons,
    disapproving of the drawing.

To disrespect Serena Williams, a 23 time Grand Slam Champion, in
this light is truly disappointing. As an Australian, I am truly
    disappointed #morethananathlete

As did the Sydney Herald, another newspaper in the country.

“The trouble,” one opinion writer wrote in that newspaper, “is
that Knight has gone out of his way to depict her not as a
champion athlete but as wild and barbaric; full-lipped, ugly and
    ape-like.”

While the newspaper and Knight, in his comments in the paper,
stood by the cartoon, it appeared the social media outrage was
too much. Or the post was too much for Twitter (it’s not clear
which.) As of Tuesday morning, Knight’s Twitter account – where
he was flooded with comments after proudly posting the cartoon
on Monday – was no longer active.
