Good Friday morning. Welcome to day 34 of the campaign=2C

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney=E2=80=99s provincial mishandling of COVID-19=
became a federal focus as the Liberal leader tried to tie his pandemic ap= proach to Conservative Leader Erin O=E2=80=99Toole=2C who dodged all quest= ions about Mr. Kenney.

As Alberta struggles under an escalating fourth wave=2C Prime Minister Jus=
tin Trudeau pointed to Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole=E2=80=99s past praise for the p= rovince=E2=80=99s handling of COVID-19 as evidence of a likely poor federa=
l approach to pandemic management under a Conservative government.

=E2=80=9CJust a few days ago=2C Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole was still applauding K= enney for his management of the pandemic. That=E2=80=99s at the heart of t=
he choice Canadians need to make in this election=2C=E2=80=9D said Mr. Tru= deau during a campaign stop in Montreal=2C according to CBC News (https://= www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-otoole-kenney-alberta-1.6177965?utm_sourc= e=3DSubscriber+-++Hill+Times+Publishing&utm_campaign=3Debd230cf44-Politics= -This-Morning&utm_medium=3Demail&utm_term=3D0_8edecd9364-ebd230cf44-92461148&mc_cid=3Debd230cf44&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) . =E2=80=9CHe=E2=80=99s not=
the right leader to put an end to this pandemic.=E2=80=9D

Reporters questioned Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole repeatedly on that front=2C press=
ing whether he=E2=80=99d changed his tune on his former federal caucus col= league. On Thursday=2C from Saint John=2C N.B.=2C Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole refu=
sed to say whether Mr. Kenney handled the pandemic better than Mr. Trudeau=
=2E He was asked that question 10 times=2Cper The Toronto Star=E2=80=99s cou= nt. =E2=80=9CThroughout this crisis=2C all the provinces have tried to make th=
e balance between making public health paramount and balancing off the eco= nomic needs. All provinces have shifted and adjusted based on various reas= ons=2C=E2=80=9D said Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole=2C responding broadly to one of t= hose 10 questions.

On Wednesday=2C Mr. Kenney apologized for his government=E2=80=99s handlin=
g of the pandemic in the province=2C which is now under a state of emergen=
cy and under added COVID-19 measures. Mr. Kenney also said he would =E2=80= =9Creluctantly=E2=80=9D bring in a vaccine passport program in an effort t=
o stem spiking cases and overburdened hospitals=2C dealing with at least 2=
    70 patients in intensive-care units this week (https://globalnews.ca/news/= 8192486/alberta-covid-19-coronavirus-update-september-15/?utm_source=3DSub= scriber+-++Hill+Times+Publishing&utm_campaign=3Debd230cf44-Politics-This-M= orning&utm_medium=3Demail&utm_term=3D0_8edecd9364-ebd230cf44-92461148&mc_cid=3Debd230cf44&mc_eid=3DUNIQID) .

And the situation doesn=E2=80=99t seem to be improving=2C with health offi= cials warning some patients could be transferred to Ontario as a last reso= rt=2C with instructions already being given for Alberta hospitals to find=
    non-intensive care beds for critically ill COVID-19 patients=2C per CBC N= ews. (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/covid-alberta-deena-hinshaw-= verna-yiu-1.6178262?utm_source=3DSubscriber+-++Hill+Times+Publishing&utm_c= ampaign=3Debd230cf44-Politics-This-Morning&utm_medium=3Demail&utm_term=3D0= _8edecd9364-ebd230cf44-92461148&mc_cid=3Debd230cf44&mc_eid=3DUNIQID=

=E2=80=9CI cannot stress enough how serious the situation is in our hospit= als=2C=E2=80=9D said Dr. Verna Yiu=2C president and CEO of Alberta Health=
Services=2C in a news conference on Thursday.

On day 33 of the campaign=2C from his perch in Montreal=2C Mr.Trudeau prom= ised his government would be better for Quebecers=2C through action on cli= mate change=2C maintaining the ban on 1=2C500 types of military-style assa=
ult weapons=2C and creating 37=2C000 new child care spaces in the province=

Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole focused on seniors=2C promising to introduce a new Can=
ada Seniors Care Benefit=2C increase the Home Accessibility Tax Credit=2C=
invest $3-billion over three years to renovate long-term care homes=2C an=
d boost the number of personal support workers in long-term care and home=
    care.

During his tour in the GTA=2C NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was focused on hous= ing=2C saying the NDP=E2=80=99s National Housing Strategy would address se= rial house flipping and money laundering within the market=2C increase the=
supply of affordable homes=2C and introduce measures to make homes more a= ffordable for families.

    On the leaders=E2=80=99 tours today=2C day 34 of the campaign=2C Mr. Trude=
    au has a 9 a.m. announcement from Windsor=2C Ont.=2C where the Liberals ho=
ld one of the city=E2=80=99s two ridings. Liberal incumbent Irek Kusmiercz=
yk took Windsor-Tecumseh from the New Democrats in 2019 by a very slim 1.1=
per cent margin=2C but former NDP MP Cheryl Hardcastle is raring for a re= match to flip the seat back to orange. The other riding is held by NDP inc= umbent Brian Masse=2C who also faced stiff competition in 2019=2C holding=
off the second-place competitor in Windsor West by only 3.7 percentage po= ints.

Mr. Singh has made two stops already in Windsor (on day 11 and 31 of the c= ampaign). But today=2C he=E2=80=99s in Sherbrooke=2C Que.=2C which the NDP=
lost in 2019 to the Liberals by only 609 votes. He=E2=80=99ll make a 9:45=
a.m. announcement there and by the afternoon=2C he=E2=80=99ll be in Atlan=
    tic Canada. First up=2C a 2:30 p.m. announcement in Liberal-held Sackville=
    =2C N.S.=2C and a 3:30 p.m. meeting with supporters in Liberal-held Halifa= x=2C where the closest New Democratic challenger got within 12 points in 2= 019.

    Mr. O=E2=80=99Toole is in London for a 12:30 p.m. announcement=2C followed=
by a 7:30 p.m. event in Liberal-held St. Catharines=2C where the Conserva= tive challenger=2C in 2019=2C came in second nearly nine points behind. Lo= ndon=E2=80=99s four ridings are split with half held by the Liberals=2C an=
d one apiece by the Conservatives and NDP. Each were won by double-digit m= argins=2C though the NDP-held London-Fanshawe is perhaps closest in reach=
=2C with the Liberal and Conservatives in a tight race for second=2C and b= ehind by about 14 percentage points.

Bloc Qu=C3=A9b=C3=A9cois Leader Yves-Fran=C3=A7ois Blanchet is spending hi=
s morning in Bloc-held Trois-Rivi=C3=A8res=2C which his party took from th=
e NDP but only 2.4 points ahead of the second-place Conservative candidate=
=2E He=E2=80=99ll also head to Quebec City=2C where Treasury Board President=
Jean-Yves Duclos is fighting to keep his seat after narrowly winning in 2= 019.

People=E2=80=99s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier is in Strathmore=2C=
    Alta.=2C to take part in a local =E2=80=9Cfreedom rally=E2=80=9D alongsid=
    e Ontario MPP Randy Hillier.

In other events=2C Governor General Mary May Simon is presiding over a cer= emony to recognize 13 Canadians for various achievements=2C including for=
    bravery and volunteering.

Two weeks away from Sept. 30=2C which is National Truth and Reconciliation=
Day=2C Queen=E2=80=99s University is hosting a webinar looking at the day=
and asking the question: symbolic gesture or systemic change? That=E2=80= =99ll be with Bob Watts=2C who is a former interim executive director of C= anada=E2=80=99s Truth and Reconciliation Commission=2C former CEO of the A= ssembly of First Nations=2C and a former assistant deputy minister for the=
    Government of Canada.
