The number symbolism used here is somewhat confusing. According to the
"Great Commentary" to the Changes, the number 6 corresponds to yin and
Earth, while 5 is assigned to yang and Heaven. If we assume that Yang
adopts the Changes numerology, then we might read these lines as proof
of Yang's eclectic philosophy, for they make yin ch'i the ineffable fountainhead of all the various yang manifestations, as in classical
Taoist philosophy.
The orthodox Confucian objection is given by the Ch'ing scholar, Ch'en
Penli:
Heaven's number is five; Earth's is six. The trunk is assigned to yang;
the branches, to yin. In a discussion employing the numbers of Heaven
and Earth, the trunk, then, ought to be called "five" and the branches
"six." Now, in contrast, [the passage] says, "Six, the trunk . . . five,
the branches . . .'' This, then, is a case of yin and yang mixed, [which portends] the reversal of the positions of ruler and minister.
Unfortunately, Appraisal 1 in an odd numbered tetragram is always
correlated with auspicious yang ch'i; this makes it highly unlikely that
Yang's verses should offer veiled criticism.
I suggest a simple solution: Each Appraisal in the tetragram is assigned
to one of the Five Phases in succession. Six, then, represents the
higher One—a kind of internal pun for the ruler (of Heaven or of Earth),
as it does with many other Han writers. YANG HSIUNG can be said to
typify Han classicism in his preference for divine Oneness over that
which is varied or multipliciouss.
Here the one ruler's influence spreads throughout the empire,
transforming it.
Only the ruler, the One Man as he is called, can accomplish this, since
he alone provides a Unifying vision of the Way to counter multiple
claims based on self interest. So long as the ruler's influence
addresses the needs of his people, they will respond by offering him
their complete allegiance. In this way, the branches depend upon the
trunk in the same way that subjects depend upon the ruler." [YANG
