A MERE mention of the much-dreaded HIV/AIDS sends a chilly cold bite into
the spines of many people in the world newadays. What, with the revaging blows it has dealt most countries, especially the developing countries.
The dialectics which had arisen as to its place of origin quickly gave way
to a serious search for a solution to the ever-increasing catastrophe of the disease. Since this search began, there have been dozens of claims and counter claims about the discovery of cures for the ailments. All such claims, however, fizzle out in no time.
But here in Nigeria, there is a current claim to the discovery of cure for AIDS by one of Nigeria's most distinguished medical whizkids, Dr. Jeremiah Abalaka, director, Medicrest Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Born 51 years ago in Dekina, Kogi State, Dr. Jeremiah Abalaka was educated
at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) between 1967 to 1972 where he obtained MB BS degree with distinctions in surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology and pediatrics. He was the best graduating medical student in ABU that year as well as the best graduating student in chemical pathology.
At University of Ibadan where he did his postgraduate studies in Immunology, he came out with distinction again.
Dr. Abalaka , who is a member of the Medical Council in Surgery (partI 1 and II), is also a member of professional conferences in Geneva, Accra , London, Liverpool and Edinburgh, e.t.c
Dr. Abalaka is a registered medical practitioner since 1973.
His 26-year sojourn in the medical profession has seen him work in several establishments in different capacities. He had taught different aspects of medicine in ABU, Liverpool, etc as well as occupied various management positions in the health departments of several establishments.
At different times, Dr. Abalaka had been consultant surgeon in Makurdi, Lokoja, and head of department of general hospitals in Makurdi, Lokoja and Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital. He is currently the medical director of Medicrest Hopital, Gwagwalada, his brainchild.
In this interview with Health Correspondent, Victoria Humbe, Dr. Abalaka throws much light on his new discovery of the cure for AIDS .
    What is AIDS?
AIDS is a constellation of clinical illnesses primarily opportunitic infections and malignancies, that are the consequence of the destruction of the immune system by HIV for any infected person, AIDS is the final manifestation of an infection that started many years previously. HIV infection is continous and relentless in its progression.
Could you please tell us how it is transmitted from one person to another. AIDS can be transmitted from one person to another through many ways. It is can be through used neddle by an AIDS patient, it can be through nail cutter used by an AIDS patient too, blood transfusion. A baby can get it through breast feeding or the placenta of an infected mother. Indiscriminate sex can also transmit the deadly disease.
We learnt you are working towards a cure for AIDS. Nigeria does not have sophisticated laboratories. So, how are you doing this because we feel that if western countries have not discovered the cure for AIDS even with their genetic engineers and well equipped laboratoris it will really be an uphill task for you to do so without such equipment?
You see, my professional experience thought me that you should not use sophisticated materials to deal with medical problems facing mankind. For example smallpox came to western countries and was killing a lot of people when Edward Jena, who used his simple initiatives to discover the cure for smallpox.
Eward Jena discovered that girls milking cow milk were not touched by this dreadful disease called smallpox. Dr. Jena now asked these young ladies why they were not attached by the smallpox, all the young ladies said to him
that they used the boil from the cows to rub on their bodies. When the smallpox now re-appeared the next season, Dr. Edward used this method and discovered it worked, today the smallpox vaccine we are using are made from cow boils.
Another interesting example was the discovery of rabies by a chemist, not even a medical doctor. This chemist took the head of a dog that is infected with rabies and dried it and grand it in power form, then dissolve it into a solution and injected someone that has been affected with rabies. Today, the rabies vaccine we take is gathered from dogs that are affected with rabies. Lets talk about polio, yellow fever, and cough. Uptill date, there is no medicine for them. Where are these genetic engineers with their computer laboratories. You see, our problem in Africa is that we submit our mentality to the western countries. I am not bothered by the issue of the American genetic engineers. I am using what God has given to me.
If a disease has no cure, the only solution is to find a way of stopping the further spread of such dreadful disease. That is why we do immunise because it prevents people from having the disease more.
In your research you said that your patients are not treated with drugs, so how are they cured then?
Yes, I use no drugs for my treatment. What I use is the patient's blood
only. When you come with your virus I use it to treat you. The blood I take from this patient is treated and injected it back to the patient. This stimulates the virus to fight back the existing ones in the body.
Since these viruses are trickish, I now take Mr. A virus and exposed it according to this virus to fight the disease back, that is my principle.
What do you add to the blood you take from your patients before you inject
    it back to them?
Hmm, I cannot reveal my secret now because other countries or people that have money more than me will use my own initiatives to start producing this in mass number to make money without a little respect for me. This helps because whoever has HIV has the culture because there is no animal that can be used for experiment.
Chimpanzee picks the infection but never developed into AIDS and because of the change of the immune system in the body I use the patient himself to treat his own case.
When did you start treating AIDS patients with your new discovery and who
was the first person you carried your experiment on?
I used myself for 15 months for experiment, I called all members of my
family I told them my aim and carried out a research on how to cure AIDDS, nobody was ready to come out for the experiment.
Therefore I took my personal blood, treated it and injected it back to
myself and nothing happened to me, I did this for 15 good months without any problem. That was when I called this method of treatment "safe treatment".
I thank God my system worked and I am happy with it today.
My first patient I treated and she is now okay was in October 1997, she is looking now like oen of the Miss Nigerians.
This young lady came to me with her problem. I then sent her to the Federal Ministry of health for her HIV test because I don't have a laboratory here.
I thought it was cancer but the pathologist that did the test confirmed that she was tested HIV positive. I was not convinced with that result so I sent her to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for another test which she was tested HIV positive again. I now started my treatment, I thank God she is looking more healthy and fat today. EVen if she has sex with a man that has AIDS she will not take it again because her HIV treated blood will fight it back and destroy the virus.
My second patient was in December 8, 1997 (his identity not disclosed). It was in a terrible situation but now it is all over, he only comes once in a month for the t est.
How long does it take you to treat HIV patients?
The duration of treatment depends on how long the disease has stayed with you; the longer it destroyed your immune system, the longer it will take me to bring the situation under control. That is why it is good to be always going for HIV test to allow quick discovery of the disease.
Sir, don't you think that the HIV will re-appear in your patients sometime
    in the future after treatment?
Well, I cannot give a concluding answer to that question now because all the patients treated are yet to complete two years. But with full assuance, that won't reappear because they are looking quite healthy.
What is the best approach to fighting AIDS?
The best approach to AIDS is prevention. Development of an effective vaccine would eliminate the future treatment of this disease. However, the development of an HIV vaccine has been hampered by many problems. One is our incomplete understanding of the host immune response to the virus, although many individuals develop neutrralizing antibodies to HIV, their role in
    virus is unclear.
Until vaccines are developed, educating people to reduce transmissins of HIV remains the only effective way of lackling its spread.
Have you written to the health authorities to inform them of your new discovery about the HIV as a way of spreading information with a view to eradicating it.
You see, our country has a very terrible attitude, the people in authority are less concerned on important issues, they prefer focusing on less important issues.
I wrote a letter to the former head of state Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar dated 3rd February 1999 there was no reply from him until he pack to his village
    in Minna Niger State.
I also wrote another one to the new President Olusegun Obasanjo thinking
that the civilian is more sound than a military man, but nothing has yet
    been done.
I wrote to weorld health organisation (WHO) on 3rd March 1999, I write the American embassy too to inform them of my new discovery and the British embassy which is the only body that has so far reply my letter. The nations continue to give me deaf ear because I don't want to disclosed the secret behind what I add to the blood before injecting it back to my patients, immediately I do that the Americans are ready to kill you develop your own initiatives and take the glory from you cuss with mmbers of my family that
if I am kidnap today, American are behind my kidnap because they are jealous people they don't want the progress or glorious name of another country.
