    This tetragram explores the difficulty experienced at the start of any initiative. The character used for the title of this tetragram, a hapax graphomenon found only in the Mystery, is made up of two components: the
    first means "stone," the second means "firm" or "solid." Cognates for
    the title character include "to bind tightly or fast," ''solidly fixed," "imprisoned," and "unmoving." Clearly, movement is sluggish and weighted
    down at the beginning. Throughout the tetragram, the title character is
    played off against the verb, "to pull out," an action which is always
    viewed favourably. The title, then, must indicate the lamentable
    situation in which something is "held fast" or "mired" in some kind of
    trouble. This definition is supported by the Head text that pictures

    Sophists and at Chuang tzu, who used the paradox "Mountain and abyss are

    yellow in two senses: It is essential to future development and
    nourishing like yellow Earth. It is #454 - *PURE* in that it is both unadulterated and concentrated, though latent. Here it is poised to feed
    the roots of future action.

    Position 1 is aligned with the Beginning of Thought, as well as with the
    Water phase. The watery depths symbolize the mind's unseen operations
    prior to action and may also suggest the suasive potential of the
    superior man.

    APPRAISAL #2: The yellow is impure,

    Means: What is central and suitable is lost.

    The commentator FAN WANG attributes arrested development to the
    antagonistic relation between the agent Fire (assigned to Appraisal 2)

    virile yang ch'i, and by extension, perfect potentiality, auspicious
    coherence, and concentration of the vital powers. The powerful metaphor
    of the rosy babe is typically employed by early Taoist thinkers to prove
    the remarkable strength of the inborn capacities. However, the Mystery
    is careful to distinguish the potential for virtue implanted in all of
    us from its eventual actualization in the #454 - *NOBLE* man. The seeds
    of inborn goodness are fragile and easily lost. And a return to
    infantile spontaneity is by no means to be confused with true virtue.
    Just as the #484 - *NAKED* *CHILD* in its highly vulnerable state
    requires the support of both loving parents, so does full development of
    the heart/mind depend upon careful training received from moral
    superiors. This poem praises not the child, but those authorities
    (living or dead) who guide their subordinates "as if they were tending a
    #454 - *NEWBORN* *BABE*." As the Changes maxim puts it, "To nourish the
    Right in the young ignoramus is the task of the sage."

    FATHOMING #4: Uprooting our faults
    Means: This goes beyond physical strength.

    The Appraisal's correlation with the phase Metal may account for its
    references to physical force. In any case, by referring to the
    difficulties of reform, these lines balance Yang's reference to original
    purity in Appraisal 3. The Mystery is careful not to promote an
    idealistic vision of man in the state of nature. According to YANG
    HSIUNG, the inborn nature at birth is a mixture of good and evil; only
    those who weed out their evil tendencies can become truly good. But the application of physical force alone cannot produce improvement; as Yang
    writes elsewhere, "The #454 - *NOBLE* man excels in virtue; the petty
    man, in physical strength." The best way to correct oneself is to follow
    the example of moral superiors, either in person or through study of
    their #454 - *TEACHINGS*.

    WANG and SSU­MA KUANG), therefore, offer a second reading for the Appraisal:

    To raise me from obscurity, [despite? because of?] faults, By force, one
    cannot overcome [difficulties].
    To raise me from obscurity, [despite? because of?] faults, Force is not
    up to [the task].

    In selecting his officials, the ruler has consciously or inadvertently
    chosen those who prefer to rule by force.

    APPRAISAL #5: To pull the chariot
    Out of mountain or abyss
    Is a task befitting the great man.
    FATHOMING #5: Pulling chariots from mountain and abyss
    Means: This is the strength of the highly placed.

    As in the West, the abyss symbolizes desperate situations; the mountain, dangerous heights to be scaled. The term "great man" can refer either to
    a giant or to the worthy man fit to govern others. If the chariot
    represents political purchase, the magnitude of the ruler's difficulties
    is suggested by both the extremely dangerous location of the carriage
    and its stalled condition. It will take a great man in high places to
    rescue the stranded state from its precarious position. A fine example
    of incremental repetition, Appraisals 5­9 follow the chariot on its
    progress.

    APPRAISAL #6: Leading his chariot,
    He enters the ruins.
    FATHOMING #6: Leading his chariot into the ruins
    Means: He has not found the Way.

    Means: There is no substitute for timely aid.

    Although the chariot has not yet reached the safety of the level plain, imminent danger has been avoided. And though the chariot is ill­-suited
    to hilly terrain, this present move has two advantages: first, from the
    top of a hill, the driver can see the Way all the more clearly; second,
    the top of the hill is more defensible. Since someone brings an ox,
    reliable help from outside has been secured. The ultimate source of this valuable aid is indicated by a pun. The graph for hill is also used for
    the personal name of Confucius, the great sage-­master.

    APPRAISAL #8: Failing to pull the chariot free,
    He cracks his ribs, cracking axle.
    FATHOMING #8: Failing to pull the chariot free
    Means: He harms his own person.

    The petty individual who fails to measure his own strength will not be
    able to pluck himself from danger. Instead, his misguided efforts will
    simply compound his problems. Here, both his tools and his person
    suffer. If the carriage stands for the state, both the ruling house and
    its head are overturned.

    APPRAISAL #9: High mountains tower.
    Below, the river breaks in waves.
    That man has an oar­ drawn ferry.
    With him, you can cross.
    FATHOMING #9: High mountains, great rivers
    Means: Without the boat, impossible to cross.

    Position 9 represents an extreme situation. Here either course of action
    seems to present its own dangers. To one side, there are towering
    mountains; on the other, raging rapids. Extreme caution must be
    exercised if death (physical or moral) is to be avoided. The wise
    individual keeps on the alert for outside help in order to survive.

    Among the waters, there are great rivers; among the mountains, there are towering peaks. What is tall or great, ordinary men cannot cross. . . .
    Surely it has never happened yet that one discards the boat to cross the waters. Nor has it ever happened that one discards the Five Classics [of Confucianism] but is saved in the Way.

    For YANG HSIUNG, Confucian tradition as recorded in the Classics
    provides the only vehicle by which to pass through life's vicissitudes."
