• Flashbacks to 1962

Most likely strategy for US against Iran needs to be effective and clean.

It comes to mind, thinking back to 1962, would be a blockade of shipping to Iran in a fashion similar to blockade of Cuba in 1962.

It is tantamount to a declaration of war without firing a shot.

We would suggest US Congress to approve of any such blockade.

Iran's mullahs have some time to mull about the issue while the idea is tossed around in US strategic circles for a President to mull about.

Certainly, US Naval power has ability to thwart of Iranian gnats and torpedoes as Iran objects.

US would rather not start off by sending in ground troops to overrun Iran, nor does US feel like using firepower against land territory within Iran just yet. Not yet recommended without trying other things first.

So a "holy war" becomes an "oily war"
We understand China's concern for potential of impeding oil shipments from Iran, but a blockade is not expected to last very long before Iran orders a couple hundred hostages to be released.
