. . .
At last someone is remembering the work of Emily Warren Roebling !
An extraordinary person ... took over the Brooklyn Bridge project
when her husband Washington Roebling was crippled by the bends
and rapidly became a thoroughly competent engineer in her own
right, not to mention navigating vendors, press and politicians
along the way. This was NOT considered "a woman's place" at the
time, but, hey, she was GOOD at it.
In days past, there were certain women who had to rise to the
call when their important husbands were suddenly incapacitated
yet politics and circumstance demanded 'continuity'.
Our first de-facto 'female president' was Edith Wilson. When
her husband suffered a serious stroke she took over policy
decisions, though in his name, during the chaotic span just
after WW-1. A few associates KNEW she was in charge, but
helped. Woodrow did recover just enough to be seen a few
times before his term expired.
It is also heavily rumored that Nancy Reagan came to serve
a similar role in the last year of her husbands presidency.
Harder to verify was the role of Mary Todd Lincoln. Some
paint her as an oblivious socialite, others as savvy and
playing a significant role in her husbands decisions during
the Civil War.
