San Francisco woman is hit by driver at intersection before
being run over by driverless Cruise vehicle that stopped on
top of her for 30 MINUTES as she screamed for help

A California woman is being treated for 'multiple traumatic
injuries' after being hit by a Sedan before becoming trapped
    underneath a Cruise vehicle

Shocking footage posted to social media shows the victim's
feet poking out from under the white vehicle as police
    officer's attempted to reassure her

The accident is the latest in a series of serious incidents
involving Cruise's autonomous vehicles in the Bay city

    . . .

    Driver-less strikes again !

The systems are OK for "ordinary situations", well
mostly, but they lack animal instincts for when
    things become extra-ordinary.

Real lucky the vehicle batteries didn't also explode
    and roast her.

Try to swat a fly. It's almost impossible even though
the thing has a brain the size of a pinprick. There's
a few hundred million years worth of evolutionary-
derived "programming" in that pinprick brain. It can
outperform a big computer, and WAY out-performs
anything they can stick in a little automobile.

Flies are examples of "how it's done" that we have
not been able to replicate with modern hardware
    and techniques.

Until "autonomous" vehicles come up to fly standards,
keep them off the road. To HELP keep them off the
road SUE THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF AUTONOMOUS-VEHICLE
    MAKERS/DISTRIBUTORS/BUYERS every time there's the
slightest problem or even scare. A group of lawyers
could make such "AI" lawsuits their specialty ...

Look ... back in the latter 60s, experts felt SURE
that proper "AI" would be achieved within a few years.
The Marvin Minsky (who used to post on usenet) school
were CONVINCED it was about to happen - before some
very very ugly truths about what's REALLY necessary
to process a single thought were realized. The "HAL-9000"
from "2001" was written assuming Minsky's "truths".

Autonomous driving/flying has been a similar case. Not
too long into development they felt they HAD it. However
the real world is proving them wrong - and putting us all
in peril. The MONEY motive is keeping these things on
the road - so it's important to drain all the money OUT
    of such programs.

(I'd suggest Minsky's "Society Of Mind" - it tends to
go on about what you can have a transistor or simple
logic gate "decide" SO EASILY. Unthought was the
zillion diverse steps needed to reduce the problem
to a state where that one transistor had something
worth shit to 'decide'. Their 'electronic Vulcans'
    never materialized)

I test drove a Tesla with the automatic pilot feature and it scared me.
I went right through 2 stop signs and that was it for me.
Not ready for prime time IMHO.

The things SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD.

Alas, there's lots of demand from regular consumers and
maybe more important - and dangerous - a huge desire from
the commercial transport industry. They want to get rid
of those asshole independent truckers REAL bad.

So, while I'm generally not in favor of ambulance-chasers,
I'd encourage a few firms dedicated to extracting money
from the makers/owners/operators of "self-driving" vehicles.
Any excuse, from deprivation of employment to every bit
of damage and 'psychological harm' that can be found. Take
all the profit out of the things.

Maybe in 20 years or so they WILL be up to the skills
of insects. But NOT NOW. Some entirely different sort
    of computational paradigm is needed.

Oh yea, such 'new paradigms' will be of great military
use. That means lucrative contracts. How about attack
drones that can bob and weave as deftly as that fly you
are trying to swat when anti-aircraft fire takes aim ?
