The U.S. military shot down a flying object over Lake Huron
near the Canadian border, U.S. officials said on Sunday, as
North American security forces have been on high alert for
airborne threats.
Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity,
told Reuters that the military had shot down the object
but declined to say whether it resembled the large white
Chinese balloon that was shot down earlier this month.
U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin, who represents a district
in Michigan, near where the incident took place, said pilots
from the U.S. Air Force and National Guard shot down the object.
"Great work by all who carried out this mission," she wrote
on Twitter.

In any case this is the third mystery flying object within
a week. Airspace over Montana was closed briefly because
they thought there might be another, but it was determined
(or CLAIMED) to be a "radar anomaly".
So is this our immediate future, "Balloon Wars" ? China/NK/Russia
can make a whole bunch of them real cheap and pump them into the
jet stream. They don't even have to DO anything -just "look
threatening" - and NORAD will go nuts over them. Of course WE
can pump some out from Poland or central asia or even Ukraine
so they'll fly over Russia and China .... psy-war all around
with 18th-century tech.
Hmmm ... what would it cost to make a full-sized faux-Hindenberg
these days ? Doesn't need power or anything, just to be BIG
and impressive. DO fill it with hydrogen though, for nostalgic
reasons and so if they shoot at it the thing goes down in flames
and scorches a cornfield or something.

The balloon was just TOO DAMNED BIG to cover up. Everybody
could see it. Chinese balls have figuratively (sort of
literally in this case) grown since Biden arrived.
I understand why the military wants, sometimes needs, to
keep secrets. Not letting the foe discover what you do or
don't know can be strategically useful.
Oh well, the cover is off now. Everybody with a pair of
bargain binocs is gonna be scanning the skies for
whatever and no ranking pol will DARE trying to hide
the fact.
As an aside ... some of the SUBSEQUENT objects shot at ...
nobody seems to be telling the truth. They did not look
or act like balloons or powered drones. Description of
one was "cylindrical" - flattened ends. Sorry, nobody
flies cylinders, one of the most 'draggy' shapes there is.
This has led to comparison with some of the "tic-tac"
UFOs that aviators seem to encounter often. Hannity had
a military pilot on today who said his people saw them
all the damned time plus some that looked "like a black
cube surrounded by a clear shell" that did NOT fly like
balloons at all.
Hmmm ... did Joe just start a war with E.T. ??? If DC is
suddenly replaced by a 20-mile crater we'll know :-)

We are so used to thinking of "drones" as aeroplanes (wings and propellers) that we do not grasp that other things can be "drones".
"Black cube surrounded by a clear shell." Hmm, a radar reflector inside a balloon? Sensor pack inside a balloon?
One of the things ignored (or that most people do not know) is the
US used balloons to probe the Republic of Cuba's air defenses back in
the 1950s. Send up radar reflectors of various sizes (read that as
"for specific wave lengths") and note which one's get a response from
Cuban air defenses.
We did similar things to the Soviet Union, and Red China. (And the Soviets to us) with the same intent: Get them to fire up search
radars, fire control radars, alert fighters, etc, etc, in order to
record them for later analysis.
