BSP PAID BACK TO BJP FOR UTTAR PRADESH: MAYAWATI
Aaj Tak
Saturday, April 17, 1999
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati said her
party's vote against the Vajpayee government was "our
reply to the BJP" for causing a split in the BSP in
Uttar Pradesh despite a coalition pact between the two.
She said the party's five Lok Sabha members voted
against the government keeping in view the interest of
the 'bahujan samaj' (Dalits) adding she would welcome
early elections.
Asked about her Friday's announcement to abstain from
voting, she said she had learnt her lesson from Uttar
Pradesh, where the BJP had caused a split in the BSP.
"I did not show my cards till the last minute after
learning from the Uttar Pradesh experience. As per our
arrangement when I handed over the charge of the state
to the BJP, it was our turn to have the Speaker. But
the BJP persuaded me and later misused the power of
Speaker to split the BSP," she said.
She denied having met Congress president Sonia Gandhi
on Saturday morning and said her party was still
against the Congress. Asked about her party's role in
formation of an alternate government, she said "Wait.
We will announce at the last minute like we did today."
She said the BSP will welcome fresh elections as the
unstable political situation will be in its interest.
