• Stereo Scope for a kid

From bafonso@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Mon Aug 29 11:14:48 2016
    Hi everyone,

first time poster here, but an experienced scope user. I've found out my son in law loves rocks and nature in general and the parents also considered getting him a scope. This is where I come in for his bday and christmas gift combined... an entry level
    stereo scope!

They live in portugal but I live in US so I thought about bringing him some good deal from this side, where abundance is plenty in the used market.

I work w/ scopes every day ranging from simple leica/olly stereo scopes up to half a million dollar custom 2p scopes. Unfortunately my budget here is reallistically 200-250$US. So yeah, I cannot get what I know I'd like him to have. :-) My initial
googling appears to show that everyone seems to be giving their kids amscope scopes which I've never heard of.

So my question is basically, are there great second hand models from known makers that I should be looking for? craigslist found me some fischer sci scopes but I don't know those. Is Ebay my only option or are there other websites I should be looking for?

Lots of lower cost scope makers out there but how good are these? I'd rather spend 250 on a second hand with decent optics where I can add an LED light to than some crappy optics w/ crappy camera...

    Any advice welcome! cheers

With your level of expertise you may easily be frustrated buying AmScopes
    or the likes.
Go for a decent second hand.
If it is good, your son in law may grow old with it.
If it fails, he may get disappointed and never look back at it.
Limiting to 250 may be a bit sharp, watch out for second hand wrecks.
Maybe a little "family funding" round can help?

    Cheers!
