This is all well known.
Mercury flew on upgraded Atlas ICBMs (no upper stage needed). Gemini
flew on upgraded Titan II ICBMs (pretty much stock two stage
configuration). Saturn I, IB, and V were all designed to be launch
vehicles from the start and were never used as ICBMs.
During the 60s, solids were coming into their own for ICBM use as well
as for use as strap-on boosters for launch vehicles (e.g. Titan III
launch vehicle).
