The loons and religious fanatics finally drove away the
rational posters, and the site essentially died.

That’s true of a lot of groups compared to 20 years ago.

But alt.atheism is still high traffic though a lot of that is
political discussion, trolls, and off-topic mystic
    posters including me occasionally.

Usenet has been slowly dying over the years. The way connectivity
these days has gotten better means the store-and-forward model of
message distribution isn't that relevant any longer.

However, there no longer is really anything like Usenet in how it
isn't dependent on any single commercial operator, which is a shame.

Actually it is superior - if you hope for better depth and
composition. Usenet is like exchanging written letters,
each party gets to consider and compose their response
rather than just blurting out the first brainfart in their head.

However, there no longer is really anything like Usenet in how it
isn't dependent on any single commercial operator, which is a shame.

That is perhaps its greatest strength in these censorious times.

That's because it's an "agitation" group - agitation
    is a big 2020's thing.

Skeptic, well, it was MEANT to be more analytical,
"scientific", "logical" - bullshit -vs- reason.

Not as interesting, though perhaps more important.

Perhaps of greatest immediate importance, the
    anti-vaxxers. They KILL.
