    The article reports on improbable distribution of energy in five of the
    latest shots at the national ignition facility producing variable results.

    The writer quotes the term Suprathermal as being descriptive of the
    improbable distribution of energy in the core of the laser compressed
    pellet. I just want to ask about the terminology.

    If temperature is conventionally described the logarithm of the inverse of
    the thermodynamic probability of a distribution of energies, and I believe
    that is the correct definition of temperature, then improbable
    distributions of energies can still be assigned a temperature.

    What I am looking for here is a measure of how far from an expected Maxwell boltzmann distribution of energies a given less probable distribution
    actually is.

    I'm accepting of any numerical answer hopefully with some units.

    Why do I ask this question?

    Well I read recent disclosure of lockheed's patent for a fusion rocket
    using microwave pumping to establish precisely such a highly improbable distribution of energies in a gas stream facilitating fusion and providing specific impulses if I remember correctly in the millions of seconds.

    So as I read into lockheed's patents I hope that I will be able to make a contribution to the state of the art by establishing means of comparison between an actual distribution of energies and an expected distribution of energies.
