Having two snapped cables didn't auger well for a long life or for any
kind of repair. Sounds like it wouldn't have been safe to repair. By
the looks of it, it hasn't received much/any maintenance in years - scandalously bad condition.

The video is spectacular. Too bad it's of such a sad thing.

Show me slow motion video of the dome on the capitol building collapsing
while Congress is in session. That's an engineering disaster worth
    waiting for.

It will be years before anyone decides to fund something similar in the
USA. China meanwhile, is investing in science and technology. Guess
    what that means?

Astrophysics is interesting, but I doubt if their research will be
relevant to day to day life on Earth.

China has a very large population...last I knew,

So, with more PhDs/etc., they will be more tech orientated

China is opening the world's largest radio telescope up to
    international scientists

Following the collapse of the historic Arecibo Observatory in Puerto
Rico, China has opened the biggest radio telescope in the world up to international scientists.

In Pingtang, Guizhou province stands the Five-hundred-meter Aperture
Spherical Telescope (FAST), the largest radio telescope in the world, surpassing the Arecibo Observatory, which stood as the largest in the
world for 53 years before the construction of FAST was completed in
2016. Following two cable failures earlier this year, Arecibo's radio
telescope collapsed in November, shutting down the observatory for
good. Now, FAST is opening its doors to astronomers from around the
    world. ''
