DESCRIPTION: Dated April 20, 1798, this authentic 18th century
French Document is on Laid-Paper and has a large engraving at the top.
The engraving depicts the goddess Libertas carrying a pole with the
Bonnet Rouge at the top. Signed Mercoli, this detailed engraving is
surrounded by the words, Republique, Francaise, Liberte, Egalite and
Une et Indivisible and is filled with symbolism. These hand written,
General Orders are to General Louis Baraguey d'Hilliers (1764-1813)
advising him to embark in four days and is signed at the bottom,
general Bonaparte, Chief of the British Army. These orders were given
at the end of the Italian Campaign and just before the start of his
Egyptian Campaign. We have added a transcript and translation of this
document in the last two photographs. … Measuring 9 3/8” wide by
15 1/8” long, this document is in wonderful original condition.
If you search the internet you will find other signed Bonaparte
documents but I could not find and example with the large engraving
of the goddess Libertas.
