I bought my expensive Sferoflex (Luxottica) frames 2 years ago for
€250 (283.11 US Dollars, would you believe it?) after my old
optician, now retired, told me it was worth the money. Well, they
lasted only two years, and I have used them only for reading and/or
computer work.
Now you would say two years is a long time, but I've had my two other
frames I bought from Glasses Direct in England for a grand total of
75 GBP (98.08 USD) including lenses, are still going strong, despite
looking and feeling cheaper than the Sferoflex.
F*ck Luxottica!
Had you been reading this group a few years ago when it was active and
had several optical professionals involved, you would have known that
expensive frames are a mug's game :-(
Do you have the equivalent of dollar stores in GB? Ours have nice
selections of reading glasses (+1 to +3.5) for -- you guessed it -- a
dollar. Some of the frames are really cheesy, but some are pretty damn
good. Costco has packages of reading glasses for ~$20US, which are
probably pretty damn good. They ALL come from China.
That's all the correction I need now (thanks to cataract surgery with
expensive astigmatism-correcting lenses), so I must have 20 pair (99-cent-store, not Costco) in various strengths stashed around the house.
There are also a couple of mail-order places (don't know if they ship to
GB) that have good prescription glasses in decent frames for under $20 including shipping. Zenni Optical and Goggles4U, and I've ordered from
both of them. The problem is selecting frames that actually fit, of
course :-(
