• Partial shock

From Frank <"frank@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 3 19:42:40 2018
I am replacing my broken partial. The four front teeth caused by an
accident with my son bouncing his head into my mouth breaking a tooth.
It has been 14 years since bridge had to be pulled and I got a partial.
Dentist made a spare as original had broken and was repaired a couple of
times but with recent break, spare fits fine but I decided to get a new
one when original broke again. Original dentist had retired and now
passed on. New dentist made new impressions and is having a more
flexible partial made and after impressions I got the sticker shock.
I'd feel better or maybe worse if I knew what these things usually cost. Googling gives quite a range.

My guess is that google gives quite a range because fees vary widely. High-volume clinics may churn the work out less expensively but it comes
with the downsides of high-volume clinics--fast work, sometimes cheaper materials, less individualized attention.
FWIW, my fee for a flexible-base partial is about $1500.

Thanks, Steve. Figured I'd get an answer from you. My dentist is
charging almost $2,000 which may be a little steep but I've heard dental
work in the northern Delaware area is high. They said my dental plan
covers none of the cost. Clerk said they charge $4,500 for implants.
Years ago when I had this bridge removed I was concerned about the old
bridges on either side going but they have held up so maybe I should
have chosen implants then. Also maybe a better dental plan. One I have
is nearly cost free from former employee but there was choice of a more expensive better one.

I like to tell the story of a guy about 85 years old spending a lot of
time getting all upper implants to suffer a heart attack requiring a
quadruple bypass the week after completion. He did live to be 99
    afterwards.

Got my new partial yesterday and getting adjusted to it. It is
engineered and attached differently from old which had wires that
slipped over back teeth. It is very tight and fixed mainly on side from
teeth. Dentist wants me to see him again next week for any adjusting.
Thought I'd pass on these comments for those that visit here. I'm at
the age that a friend said that life is now a merry go round with doctors.

I certainly hear you. The partial will almost certainly loosen with use.

That's what I figure and it has only been a day and a half. I'll see
how it feels next week and may or may not see the dentist. I figured
visits are a part of the cost. It may have been 50 years ago but I
    bought new cars for less.

I tried to explain to my wife that it took her 4 months to adjust to
getting a new knee. She said you cannot equate the two but I explained
it has to take time to get over any change. When the old partial broke
the spare partial fit fine but took a couple of days to get used to and
also needed glue. These front partials can cantilever and the old
design wires would catch if back came loose and break when biting down.
