Dear Colleagues,
As you are aware, 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) is offering a wide range of pre- and post-congress field trips. The field trip titled ‘The Teesta Chronicle: Tectonics-Climate & Human-Landscape Dynamics’ (Code No ER005) is a unique
opportunity for you to experience the myriad shades of Teesta River, the lifeline of eastern Himalayas. Some of the highlights of this compact, easy-on-the wallet trip will be field signatures of Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Frontal Thrust (MFT);
tectono-climatic imprints on the Teesta megafan; traditional practices of the hill communities for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and; effects of ongoing tectonism on engineered structures; human interaction with landscape. Add to this the geotourism
attractions- a ride through the scenic Himalayas in the UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) and a ‘tea cycle’ tour of one of the famous Darjeeling tea estates and you are assured of returning home with memories that you will
cherish for long.
As coordinator, I invite you to participate in this attractive field trip. The period of the trip is pre-congress; the invigorating excursion will be the ideal appetizer for the succeeding technical sessions of the 36th IGC. May I also request you to
circulate this invitation widely among your peer scientific groups and institutions so that they can also join the trip. We are already receiving very encouraging interests from the global geoscientific community and look forward to your joining us in
ER005 field trip of 36th IGC.
