    There are some recent papers about problems in higher dimensional space not actually being dominated by local minima (traps). Rather being dominated by saddle points that slow down but don't stop descent to some optimal state.

    Perhaps you can adjust this idea to say IFS image compression by upping the number of dimensions. I'm sure there are some kinds of subtleties involved but likely it could be gotten to work.
