Right now there is a toxic chemical spill of unprecedented proportions
in Colorado, soon to be in New Mexico and eventually in the Colorado
River and Lake Powell, poisoning the water supply for years, maybe
    centuries to come.

The mining company I'm sure lobbied against costly government
regulations It would cost them too much to comply, raise the cost
of production, and lead to layoffs. So they just dumped it in a leaky
holding tank, and later abandoned the mine.

They made a profit from lax regulations, created a few jobs for
a few years, and future generations of taxpayers are responsible
for cleaning it up. Cost-benefit analysis or some such shit is
    what conservatives call it.

And I don't think it can be cleaned up. The Colorado River is
the lifeline of the Southwest. We're already in a drought,
and now our only other source of water is gone! Even if you
can afford a fancy reverse osmosis system to filter out the filth,
    farmers can't.

Now I predict conservatives will blame the EPA for this unfortunate
accident, brandishing it to argue why the EPA should be abolished.
BTW, this is around the area where one side of my family came from,
not too far from where I was born. So I am pissed.

"Called the Gold King, [the mine was] active in the 1920s, but it had
been leaking toxic water at a rate of 50 to 250 gallons a minute
for years. It is owned by a group called the San Juan Corporation."

"A call to the company's lawyer was not returned."
