NASA Realtime has made some updates to the sat survey of seaice and
finds the July 2021 extent in the Arctic was 7.69 mn km2, raking
4th-lowest in the modern era. Goddard also adjusted the July 2020 up a
little but it still remains lowest for the month on record.
In the Antarctic ice extent came in at 16.38 mn km2, ranking in the
top 10 highest numbers on record. Antarctic extent is significantly
influenced by ocean storms in the region. And July has been a big
month for Antarctic storms or "pulses" felt as far afield as NZ and Qld.
From the data, a single storm day along the Antarctic coast can push
extent up 1.5 mn km2. But AI studies suggests the temp of the
100-1000m ocean depth is intimately connected with Ant max extent.
As this subsurface band warms it seems to be pushing Ant max extent
higher, explaining more than 1/2 of the year-to-year variation.
The total of the N and S Hem's was 24.07 mn k2, ranking 9th lowest in
the series.
