*Satellite and ocean data reveal marked increase in Earth's heating rate

Geophysical Research Letters via Carbon Brief

New research finds that the Earth's energy imbalance - the difference
between solar radiation absorbed by the planet and thermal radiation
emitted to space - increased by 0.5 Watts per square metre per decade
between 2005 and 2009. The authors compare satellite measurements of
total energy absorbed by the Earth with in-situ measurements to
determine heating of the ocean, land and atmosphere, and melting of
snow and ice. They find that these 2 independent approaches yield
very similar results. The study finds that the change in energy
imbalance is due to a decrease in energy reflected into space by
clouds and sea ice, as well as an increase in greenhouse gases and
    water vapour.
