We have been mounting numerical protection relays on indoor 11kV and
33kV switchboards for a number of years. But recently (in the last
year or so) we have had a small number of instances where the relays
do a momentary reboot! Typically these reboots happen during CB
closings and autoreclosing and with racking out of the CB into an out
of service position! There appear to be EMC issues involved; either
with excessive (high frequency) noise from the switchgear, with
sensitivity with the relays concerned or with the coupling between the
relays and the source of the noise! We are trying to narrow down the
problems by carrying out further tests but getting accurate and
certifiable measurements in a noisy environment is proving difficult.
We would appreciate knowing if anybody else has had (similar)
protection relay rebooting problems and what they have done about
them. At this present point in time the only solution we have is to
take the relays off the switchboards and cable them away into the
relatively noise free environment of a relay room!
