California is racing to secure large amounts of power in the next few
years to make up for the impending closure of fossil-fuel power plants and
a nuclear facility that provides nearly 10% of the electricity generated
in the state.
The California Public Utilities Commission has ordered utilities to buy an unprecedented amount of renewable energy and battery storage as the state phases out four natural-gas-fired power plants and retires Diablo Canyon,
the states last nuclear plant, starting in 2024.
While the companies are moving quickly to contract for power, the
California Energy Commission and the states grid operator have recently expressed concern that the purchases may not be enough to prevent
electricity shortages in coming summers.
