• ITER to see further delays, no fusion power before 2040...

From Jan Panteltje@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jul 6 05:29:50 2024
ITER fusion reactor to see further delays, with operations pushed to 2034
    https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/07/iters-timeline-for-fusion-stretched-out-even-further/
Full fusion power won't happen until nearly 2040 on new timeline

    So never..?
    Just a taxpayers money sink.

Probably never. Tokamacs may never work.

    Just a taxpayers money sink.

Big science generally gobbles big bucks with small results. I was just
reading an essay by Freeman Dyson about that.

Elon Musk's projects should be the first cut.

SpaceX rockets are amazingly reliable and cost a fraction of the
    absurd NASA/Boeing junk.

And his booster stages are reusable. That amazes me.

The idea of using a lot of small rocket engines is brilliant. A few
can fail and the launch still works.

Maybe NASA can contract with Musk to rescue those guys that Boeing
stranded in the ISS. Better yet, evacuate everyone.

Admittedly, a rocket that will still fly with several of its parts
seriously broken is without antecedent. Previously, normal procedure
would be to blow up and scatter over a large area.

The Shuttle main engines and fuel pumps were so over-stressed that
they were a hazard too, along with the SRBs and the tiles. Lots of
    small, proven engines makes sense.

Musk is a lunatic, but as the song says, sometimes a lunatic is just
    what you're looking for.

Once NASA had done the early development work, the next stage was quite
a bit easier and more predictable. Exploring uncharted territory is
always difficult and usually expensive. China and Japan and the USA industrialised a whole lot faster than Europe because they mostly copied
what had been found to work in Europe

And his booster stages are reusable. That amazes me.

    Most thing do.

The idea of using a lot of small rocket engines is brilliant.

    But scarcely original.

A few can fail and the launch still works.

If they fail without blowing up.

We know you can't see the point of the ISS. You don't know much,
understand less, and congratulate yourself on your ignorance more or
    less non-stop.
