I still use a Casio EX-Z60 compact camera from around 2005.

The problem is it discharges the lithium battery within a couple of
weeks when left (unused) on standby. It never used to do this.

Is "standby" truly *off*? Is there a mechanical switch that
interrupts power *or* is it a "soft switch" that requires
something to always be waiting to wake up?

It is the same with a new replacement battery.

Can you gut the old battery and use it to get a couple of wires
into the battery compartment so you could power the camera from
a bench supply and monitor the actual current drain?

Then, ask if it makes sense for the battery to behave as it
appears to be, under THAT load. Or, if (perhaps) the NEW
    battery is shit...

Why is this? Is there something in the electronics (capacitors perhaps?) which degrade over time and cause a current drain?
