• OT: EV Insurance Costs Soar!

From Cursitor Doom@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 19 23:56:47 2023
Women and homos trying to appear to save the planet face *much* higher insurance costs:

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2023/sep/30/the-quotes-were-5000-or-more-electric-vehicle-owners-face-soaring-insurance-costs

The penny's finally dropping and when it's generally accepted that EVs
can cause catastrophic fires which destroy entire car parks full of
cars, EVs will be set back 10 years at least until some alternative to
    Lithium can be found.

Except - of course - that EV's don't cause catastrophic fires. Once you set an EV on fire, it's hard to put out., but any decent battery monitoring system can deliver early warning that a battery might be getting close to go into thermal runaway, and
make it safe before it does.

Idiot owners can subvert that kind of system, but they also set internal combustion engined cars on fire.

The penny that's dropping is money being spent by the fossil carbon extraction industry on propaganda designed to keep up their cash flow for a few more years.

Cursitor Doom is either a gullible sucker for their propaganda or a paid shill for it.

It seems to work on car insurance companies too, but they are always grateful for ant excuse to jack up their rates.

Insurers still have over half a trillion invested in the fossil fuel sector, with 16 carriers making up over half of that number. However, as renewable energy gains in prominence, research and funding, these investments may see a dip within the next
    decade.'

Another reason for jacking rates is market losses in their portfolios.

A lot of those rinky dink insurances companies are just pushing paper. They re-insure through real insurance the policies they sell.

Only a fool would believe at face value anything they say.

UK wouldn't have this problem if your government wasn't so corrupt.

We have like 150 traffic fatalities a _day_ in the US, any hazard posed
by cars themselves is a statistical nothing compared to the hazard posed
    by other drivers.

Rates have been going up across the board in the US lately, but my EV's
rate is still very low compared with other drivers in my demographic who
have gas cars with a similar MSRP.

I have a good credit (large factor in one's auto insurance rate here)
and I don't talk on the phone/run stop signs/never use turn
    signals/tailgate constantly/generally drive like a fucking dickhead
baby, which is a somewhat unusual quality in the US

It's a 'large' factor everywhere except the usual woke states Massachusetts, California, and Hawaii, where it is banned, they probably claim undue burden on racial and ethnic minorities. All that does is force the insurance company to hike rates across
the board for everyone to cover the expected losses.

    https://www.ftc.gov/reports/credit-based-insurance-scores-impacts-consumers-automobile-insurance-report-congress-federal-trade

"At the same time, scores are observed to be distributed differently among racial and ethnic groups, and this difference is likely to have an effect on the insurance premiums that these groups pay, on average. Nonetheless, scores appear to derive a
relatively small amount of their predictive power from their correlation with race and ethnicity. Finally, the Commission could not develop an alternative scoring model that would continue to predict risk effectively, yet decrease the differences in
scores among racial and ethnic groups."

and I don't talk on the phone/run stop signs/never use turn
    signals/tailgate constantly/generally drive like a fucking dickhead
baby, which is a somewhat unusual quality in the US

The insurer would have no way of knowing any of that unless you allow them to install a driving monitor in your OBD port or something. Some insurers do that with the lure of nominally lower rates.

The BIGGEST factor in determination of rates is the profit factor for the insurance company. But supposedly that is all audited by your state insurance commission and determined to be reasonable. The same bunch also think it's reasonable to pay the
insurance CEO $10M annual plus bonuses.

The OP is clueless to the fact his insurance industry is precariously invested in fossil fuels, and abusing their position to sabotage the transition to EVs.

Not exactly. The fossil fuel extraction industry doesn't like electric vehicles and more than climate change, and spreads the same kind of lying propaganda about them.

John Larkin is a sucker for both kinds of propaganda.
