'Companies that want to do business in the European Union will soon have to pay extra if the carbon footprints of their products are too high.

The EU on Sunday officially began phase one of its carbon tariff. The first-of-its-kind tax scheme could help reduce the climate-warming emissions of industries that are notoriously hard to decarbonize, including cement and steel manufacturing.'

About 40-50 years too late, but they can try. Maybe some super-duper atmospheric carbon removal technology will emerge...

    Spam farm, looks like.

How in the world is the EU going to enforce that carbon quota?

    Stop using concrete and steel?

Someone once described a political party as "never met a tax that they
    didn't like."

Manufacturers who want to export to EU will have to submit to inspections and audits, and possibly having monitors installed. The tariff will fund it.

    Stop using concrete and steel?

Cheap products with high carbon footprints from China and India will lose market. Anyone who buys that junk is looking for a 'deal' and cutting corners, so the higher price will do them in.

Someone once described a political party as "never met a tax that they didn't like."

Well of course. They used to be called 'lawmakers'. Now they should just be called 'spenders.'

Sounds like the usual CE certifications. The main expense is buying
    spools of stickers.

The pricing will "do in" europeans. It's happening in Germany
already... averaging consumers over 40 cents per KWH so far.

German households don't use electricity like Americans do. Even at 40 cents, their monthly bills are quite small compared to U.S. They get a very generous government subsidy for gas, and a modest cap for electricity.
