    What does

"a strong infrared laser pulse could be redirected in this way with an efficiency of 50 percent"

mean? Did they lose half the laser power?

More press-release science. You could post those all day.

    What's your current elecronics project?

'Diffraction efficiency is the performance of diffractive optical elements – especially diffraction gratings – in terms of power throughput. It's a measure of how much optical power is diffracted into a designated direction compared to the power
incident onto the diffractive element of grating.'

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffraction_efficiency

    That should have been obvious.

    What's your current elecronics project?

    project

'an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim.'

    huh?

    What does

"a strong infrared laser pulse could be redirected in this way with an efficiency of 50 percent"

mean? Did they lose half the laser power?

High frequency sound waves (above about 1 MHz) die off very fast in air.
They also cause only a very small index modulation, so getting decent diffraction efficiency requires a long interaction region.

So the diffraction angle will be small.

    Otherwise it’s a bog-standard acousto-optic
    modulator.

    Cheers

Except, it will respond to air qualities.
Any pressure or composition changes will alter the acoustic wavelength and
    the deflection amplitude(s).

One might use the effect to gain-switch a laser cavity?

** The speed of sound does not depend on air *pressure* but rather on it's temperature.
It follows very closely the sq.rt of the absolute temp value.
    Wavelength follows the inverse rule.

Of course, a sudden pressure rise induces a temp rise causing very high SPL waves to become non linear.

But the refractive index depends on air pressure (density of the gas).

    Otherwise it’s a bog-standard acousto-optic
    modulator.
