The end of genes: Routine test reveals unique divergence in genetic code
    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/10/231005161747.htm
    Summary:
Scientists testing a new method of sequencing single cells have
unexpectedly changed our understanding of the rules of genetics.
The genome of a protist has revealed a seemingly unique divergence in the DNA code
signalling the end of a gene, suggesting the need for further research to better
understand this group of diverse organisms.

Strange how every new discovery suggests the need for more research in the area to keep the scientists who make the discovery gainfully employed.

As for the significance of the discovery, it as be summarised as "protists are strange". When the regular phyla (animals, plants fungi) split off the protists had made other choices that hadn't worked out as well - great for some ecological niches, but
mostly not niches where any organism can do well.
