Retail has taken a big hit too with some really great companies ( billions in sales and 10s-100s thousands employees) suffering as much as 75% reduction in stock valuation. It's the exorbitant operating costs that're catching up with them. Target
recently reported a 50% decrease in quarterly profit despite a 4% increase in year-to-year sales. Their bean counters were not paying attention to cost increases or executive management wasn't listening to them or some other wacky reason. What's in a
number https://corporate.target.com/press/releases/2022/05/Target-Corporation-Reports-First-Quarter-Earnings . A 50% reduction is kinda hugeish. The Atlantic recently wrote an article along the lines of millennials having to get used to paying the real
cost of services. The venture capitalists have cracked down on operations like Uber, telling them the honeymoon is over and it's time to start making a profit, or else.

In other news, U.S. government is running ten trillion dollar annual deficit...

Mo and I quite like cruises. She likes to go places, I like to find a
sunny place by the sea and plunk there for a week, and a cruise ship
does both. As long as you have a balcony, get the drinks package, eat
in the restaurant and not the upper-deck buffet, and avoid the
'entertainment', they're mostly pretty good. (You also want to avoid
the overpriced shore excursions, with the possible exception of an
afternoon's ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway out of Skagway.)

You also learn to be selective about where you get off and where
not--Port Canaveral and Freeport are definite stay-aboard stops.

The one place of refuge in Freeport is a Senor Frog's bar, which just
goes to show what a hole it is.

Of course the quality of the stops isn't what you'd really like because
they're overrun while the ships are there. Being on Cozumel for a week
really shows the difference, and other places are like that too.

    Cheers

That fits the one on my left. The one on my right uses their powerboat regularly, for many years, and it's kept at their lake house when not in

There are a lot in boatyards too. Eventually the owners don't keep up
the rent. Then boatyard people spear them with a forklift and shake
until the engine falls out. That might be worth something.

Mo and I quite like cruises. She likes to go places, I like to find a
sunny place by the sea and plunk there for a week, and a cruise ship
does both. As long as you have a balcony, get the drinks package, eat
in the restaurant and not the upper-deck buffet, and avoid the >'entertainment', they're mostly pretty good. (You also want to avoid
the overpriced shore excursions, with the possible exception of an >afternoon's ride on the White Pass & Yukon Railway out of Skagway.)

You also learn to be selective about where you get off and where
not--Port Canaveral and Freeport are definite stay-aboard stops.

The one place of refuge in Freeport is a Senor Frog's bar, which just
goes to show what a hole it is.

Well, sunny places with low GDP per capita tend to have lots of
intestinal bugs, and your probability of getting mugged or shot is a
good bit higher ashore. (There are some third-worldish places onshore
too, unfortunately, but none I'd much want to visit.)

The running-aground thing is highly correlated with Italians being in
command, I'm told--the one that grounded earlier this year (Norwegian
Escape) was commanded by Giovanni Cutugno, and of course the Costa
Concordia's captain was Francesco Schettino, who is now serving a
16-year prison sentence. Apparently they're culturally prone to
    grandstanding. (Who knew?)
