    Hi, all,

I hear from an acquaintance that BEOS 3e is shipping. For those who
might be interested in a copy, there's a 20% discount code on wiley.com,
    good through May 2022: BEOS3.

    Cheers

I just looked around a bit and BeOS 5 is out there, so what is this?

Has it been finally updated to run on modern equipment?

    And who is the author?

I ran BeOS on two of my five unit crunchers back in the Seti@home
days. Lean, pure processing with little OS graphics overhead.

It would be cool to have something similar to Linux to run on modern
    gear.

    It's a considerably bigger book--830-odd pages in 8.5 x 11 inch format,
like an IEEE collected papers volume. From a word count POV it's about
a third longer than the second edition, not even counting the thermal
control chapter, which is in the printed volume this time.

So as long as you don't mind the large format, I think the new format is
    a win.

    Cheers

BeOS was outstanding in its day in its support for SMP, pre-emptive multi-tasking, and multi-media capabilities (amongst other features).
Modern Linux does better at all points - but of course it takes more
resources to achieve that, since it is a bigger and more general system.

There is the open-source descendent Haiku, which might be fun to try.

The new one is about a third longer, not counting the revised thermal

As I recall from the proof-reading stage, the original thermal chapter did need work.
