• Digikey tracking

From jlarkin@highlandsniptechnology.com@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 31 07:29:50 2022
If I look at a part on Digikey, ads for that part appear all over the
    web.

I wonder how much they pay per clickthrough. I click on lots of them,
figuring it transfers wealth to a better place.

It probably makes Google and the likes richer. Not my idea of a better
place, so I never click on those.

I assume they count my many clicks on the same part and realize what
it's costing them, and give up on tracking me. Worth a try.

LOL!!! The people doing the tracking are the ones making the money on your clicks! You are encouraging them!!!

What a maroon. I really do wonder sometimes if there is something wrong with this guy.

Unless Digikey directly tracks my clicks, Google won't get them as I
block doubleclick and other URLs automatically, unless I let them
    through.

Most A.I. that sends me ads are pretty dumb because I see them
usually after I have just bought the item they show me in the ad.

AI has a long way to go in this type of browsing I have a feeling.

Reminds me that Google tracks you in Google maps, that how they can show roadblocks on the map and divert traffic (nice feature)

Anyway, a hacker wrote a program to emulate 1000 cars, and had that
emulation travel very slowly in front of his route. Google saw this as a
road block, and rerouted traffic allowing him to pass with no traffic ;-)

Have you noticed that if you look at a part on Digikey, you see a
zillion adds for it everywhere. MSN is especially bad.

Please click on as many as possible. I'm sure Digikey pays per click.

No, I haven't noticed that. Of course I only use a browser from a Qubes
4.1 DispVM, over a good VPN, with browser fingerprinting opportunities minimized. [You can find out about how nearly unique your browser
signature is, even without cookies, by looking at <https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/>.]

That way I'm hard to identify, and any cruft the web site leaves on my
computer goes away when I close the browser, which kills the DispVM.

Highly recommended to folks who care about such things.

    Cheers

You dont use an ad blocker add-in in your web browser?
    (e.g., uBlock Origin)

You might also add-in "Clear Cache" as well; click on that after
you exit DK (or any vendor).

Its likely DK stored local cookies on your PC that MSN, etc can
    then read

John, we will all be paying for these clicks eventually.
I rarely buy via digikey lately, not since Mouser made delivery
at my doorstep with all customs etc. nonsense dealt with by
them from within the EU, but still.

I always wonder about that type of stuff.

Local security... Using 7-Zip, BEWARE. When you open an encrypted file,
the thing puts an UNENCRYPTED version right there on your primary drive C
in an obscurely named folder and does not bother to remove your UNENCRYPTED file when 7-Zip is closed. Bewildering but true. The infamous BleachBit
    can programmatically remove that folder.

Using a VPN also allows choosing a server in a country that limits website cookies. Some countries require Google websites to prompt for cookie

I can't say I've noticed, but I use Firefox with the Privacy Badger
add-on. It says it's blocked 18 possible trackers on the Digikey home page.

Firefox and NoScript deal with blocking most of that. Looking at
Digikey.ca I see the following websites that are called up:

    digikey.ca
    analytics-egain.com
    evergage.com
    evgnet.com
    go-mpulse.net
    goggleoptimize.com (turned off)
    marketo.com
    tiqcdn.com
    trustwave.com

Most of the above must be turned on for the web site to work, but I do
find that almost anything google related can blocked with no obvious
    impairment
