Well. The point is the models you were taught are wrong.
FIRST came upright walking, AND THEN later Chimps
split off from the Homo line. This means, quite literally,
if "Humans are apes because Homo descends from
apes" then Chimpanzees are HUMANS, because they
descend from the Homo line, not the other way around.
Technically, this is probably true of the gorillas as well.
The most recent common ancestor with them was
likely an upright walker...
The real point here is that people tend to think in boxes.
They allow artificial constructs -- like "Species" and
linear descent -- to limit the range of their perception and
hence thought.
