Problem Solvers: Tests show elevated levels of black mold inside Westminster apartment

WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A Westminster couple may finally know what might have caused their health problems while living inside a unit at the Arbour Square Apartments.

The FOX31 Problem Solvers looked into the couple's concerns last week. They were worried about a suspicious white powdery substance coming from beneath their floor boards. They also had concerns regarding mold.

So a local company, Thor Restoration, offered to go into the unit and run some air tests.

Thor Restoration owner Mark Wilson said the white substance could be a number of things.

"It could very well be that they didn`t mix this leveling compound properly," he said. "In and of itself I wouldn't worry about that so much except if you have mold with it."

But what's most concerning to Wilson is what their tests found in the air.

"It`s an Aspergillus which is a big Latin word, which means--that`s one of the black molds that we look for."

He said the expanded fungal report put together by EMSL Analytical, Inc. showed the elevated levels in the upstairs bathroom.

"It jumps to 400 parts per million which is ten times greater than the outside," he said. "This is actively being produced in the bathroom. In its current state, you can`t live in it."

Vedder said it's a form of validation, after he reached out to the Problem Solvers for answers.

"It completely explains why we`ve been sick for 10 months," Vedder said.

Mold exposure affects people differently. According to the Centers for Disease Control, some experience flu-like symptoms, cough, fever, rash, and headaches.

"Unlike other viruses, you don`t get stronger with it," Wilson said. "You get weaker and weaker."

The Vedders moved out but they left their belongings in the unit, worried over possible cross-contamination. They said they're stuck in liability limbo with the owners of the complex and their insurance company.

"And, you know, they`re telling us that everything`s fine--to get out," Vedder said. "You know, what do you do?"

Thor Restoration told the Problem Solvers they have offered to go in and clean all of the contents of the Vedders' unit. The couple was very thankful. They are still working out the details.

A representative for Inland Residential Real Estate services, Nicole Spreck, gave this statement to the Problem Solvers Monday: "The safety of our residents is of the utmost importance to us, as is complying with the laws concerning health and safety at
our properties. We are taking the appropriate measures to make sure that there are no hazards in the unit. Additionally, we are also working with local government authorities and agencies who are satisfied with the steps we have taken in the matter."
