Where would one look to find the original taxonomic descriptions of a
    species or subspecies?

For example, and it is only an example. Papilio machaon hispanicus Eller

    Hi Neil,

Normally I expect to find the first papers cited in Genus or subGenus monographs. Sometimes catalogues, of say Hymenoptera, give the citations. I never owned the Nomina Insecta Nearctica, but I believe the paid-for version had citations for each species.
Some versions of this are still on-line, but I have not looked carefully recently.

This one is fairly straight forward. For Lepidoptera, just go to LEP INDEX at  https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.nhm.ac.uk_our-2Dscience_data_lepindex_search_&d=AwIFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=

As many of you may know, Todd Gilligan has been hard at work on a new and improved website for LepSoc. It is nearly ready to go live. During the final stages, the current webpage (www.lepsoc.org) will be taken down (or at least password protected) for a
couple of days. It should be up again by September 1st, if not before. We will send out another announcement when the new site is live.

Thank you for your patience--it will be worth the wait!
    John
