  • [Leps-l] The Crystal Skipper: North Carolina's Newest Butterfly Species

We’re really happy to publish a blog by Allison Leidner about the crystal skipper, a butterfly that lives on barrier islands lining North Carolina’s coast. The skipper had no official name until last week, when it was
published as a new species,* Atrytonopsis quinteri*, in the scientific literature.

Allison spent five years studying the crystal skipper—and how it was coping with development-driven habitat fragmentation—for her PhD at North Carolina State University. It’s especially nice to publish this blog because Allison received a DeWind Award from the Xerces Society to support her studies. We
give two DeWind Awards each year to support research into conservation of butterflies and moths.
