    Maybe if they'd gone straight up they've have achieved orbit?

    With an engine out, the vehicle wasn't burning fuel fast enough. By the time it had burned enough fuel to compensate for the missing engine, it would be short on fuel. It would not be going fast enough to reach orbit.
