First of all, why are they driving around in pick-up trucks?? Their agility stinks, so they are not pursuit vehicles. And, if they ALREADY encountered machine-gun wielding drug-hijackers, WHY on their next encounter, which they knew the time of, would
    they NOT be better-armed??

In the U.S., the police are a big part of the problem. They should not
be pursuing people in most cases, anyway. They should be unarmed, and
largely on the ground, on foot and bikes.

It started last year. Walgreens is closing five locations in the
Bay area, specifically - and very publicly - because of the rampant
theft that is actively encouraged by the city government. A Safway
has announced more limited hours because of the organized theft
gangs. Businesses have been fleeing California for years now, and
the population is now officially declined for the first time since
    records have been kept.

    Elections have consequences.

And I'm still inclined to believe that these consequences are
*exactly* what is intended by the powers that be. To drive out the
middle class, incarcerate anyone left to use as slave labor, and
reserve California for the obscenely wealthy and their indentured
    servants.

You are absolutely right. What used to work, in a simpler time,
in England certainly won't work in the United States at the present
    time.

That is not to say, though, that the police aren't a part of the
problem. There are too many cases of innocent people being
injured or killed by the police - and the fact that this is a much
greater danger to people who are black has been noticed.

I do not know if there _is_ a *simple* answer.

Criminality is not rampant in the U.S.

What Americans have done is wall themselves off in most cities from the majority of the violent crime. However, if the crime-ridden neighbourhood people's antics
began spilling out in a major way to the middle and upper-class areas, things would change rapidly.

That depends on how high your standards are.

Certainly, Americans are far more fortunate than people living in
Somalia or even Mexico. But many Americans think that any crime
rates above those in Canada in 1963 are unacceptable.

And _that_ kind of target is entirely unreasonable in any part of
the United States that has a diverse population. Because people
in minority groups tend to be poor, they tend, understandably, to
be alienated, and this will lead to some teenagers and young
adults acting up or turning to the drug trade for money.

One part of getting to a peaceful society, of course, is bringing
about racial equality, so that decent honest work is available to
all. This will cost money, and so it meets with some resistance.

In the U.S., the police are a big part of the problem. They should not
be pursuing people in most cases, anyway. They should be unarmed, and
largely on the ground, on foot and bikes.

There would be cop bodies littering the streets if that came about, ALL the criminals are armed. Also, they're letting gangs of thugs rob San Francisco stores en masse these days. I don't see that continuing
    without a major backlash soon.
The evidence from many other countries argues against that.
Criminality is not rampant in the U.S.

What Americans have done is wall themselves off in most cities from the majority of the violent crime. However, if the crime-ridden neighbourhood people's antics
began spilling out in a major way to the middle and upper-class areas, things would change rapidly.

"Crime-ridden neighborhoods" are largely a myth. Part of the fear that
the right uses to manipulate their credulous base.

Because they are misguided. Even in the worst neighborhoods in those

That may well be true, but given that there are a lot of days in a year,
and a lot of years in a lifetime, and the consequences of being a victim of crime can be catastrophic, merely "unlikely" is not really adequate.

I recall an analysis somebody did for South Central L.A. some years
back (when the crime rates were actually higher than today). The news
portrayed this area as if bullets were flying everywhere. But the
analysis suggested that only a few percent of people would experience
a violent crime in a lifetime of living there.

Of course, most of the crime in these kinds of places is driven by the
misuse of police and a highly damaged justice system, consequences of
the "war on crime" and "war on drugs" that began in the 1970s and
1980s, mainly as a war on black people.

So dozens of people shot every weekend in places like Chicago is just a myth?

Going by another recent post here, the answer is no, but there are enough people
in Chicago that the odds are apparently tolerably low by some standards.

I was just reading an article where someone else did a study, and found that black people were many times more likely than white people to experience

Of course, other causal factors than crime were included.

You have to compare that with the millions of people in Chicago who
    are not shot every weekend.

Absolutely. The systemic racism in the U.S. pervades every aspect of a
    black person's life.
