    It's not 10%, it's 14.8% all-in. It hasn't been 10% since they were still using paypal.

    I checked. A 7" Questar starts from $8,599.

Also, brand new 180mm apochromats from TEC are available for about $24,000.

And, just to review, here are some alternatives at that aperture:

An Orion 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube is $1,299.99...

    not a heck of a lot more expensive than a 200mm Schmidt-Cassegrain!
    f/15, 2-inch optical back, 1.25" adapter included.

Of course, it's made in China by Synta.

A similar item would be $1590 in Canada.

Stellarvue is taking *deposits* of $2,000 for their 180mm apochromats,
but the price isn't stated on their page. I guess if you have to ask, you
can't afford it, as the saying goes.

Ah, it was $17,995 when originally announced.

In addition to Stellarvue and TEC, a company called CFF telescopes
in Europe also makes such telescopes.

On the other hand, an 8-inch Newtonian is available for $799.99 from
Orion. It's f/4.9, not the traditional f/6, so the central obstruction will
    be larger.

That's with a 1200 mount worth $10,000 so the scope is only $10k. The 180mm f7 if you can find one is $34,000.

True, I'm sure the Astro-Physics apochromat is a very high quality
telescope. Even so, with 8 hours left in the auction, there have been
    no bids.

Which, to me, isn't all that surprising. While a 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain
of Chinese make isn't nearly the equal of an apochromat, it's still a good telescope optically - and vastly cheaper. The small increment in quality
is worth the much higher cost only to a very few.

A Maksutov-Cassegrain - besides being available in the 7-inch size, thus facilitating direct comparison - is, of course, a convenient sealed tube,
and compact, hence offering many of the same benefits as an apo,
as compared to an even cheaper Newtonian.

The only Mak I've seen almost keep up with an AP was a Ceravolo 8 inch Mak-Newtonian. I had it and a 7 inch AP all to myself for about an hour and compared them.
The Mak was very close, but not quite as good on planets. Only deepsky it was better.

certain high frequency seeing problems seen in suburban or urban viewing areas mean those few seconds never come. The image can just boil. But in a real observing environment, you might
see more most of the time with a 12 than a 7. According to Jean Texereau, a ten inch scope is maybe useful to its full resolution 5% of the time. But he also said anything smaller than 7 inch
    scope was useless for planets.

    https://www.cloudynights.com/classifieds/item/274761-for-sale-tec200-apo-fl-f8-fluorite-apochromat-refractor/
I would buy this TEC scope as a second, next to my Celestron/Vixen 4" f/9 CF refractor!
    😎

I wouldn't squander $30K on a company that couldn't even get it right the first time.

Do you get some kind of high from your perverted obsession? Is it worth the hatred and personal derision generated against you by all these ridiculous posts?
Have you seen a psychiatrist? You should.

If this newsgroup had been more active and observers taken the opportunity to express themselves in a less formal environment, you would not notice these offenders.
