Did Ja know, ebay has a 10% selling fee now days?
So, if this AP scope sells for $20k or more, selling fee is $2k or more? Maybe Chris buys it back? (o:
Oh, well, at least it has a 180 mm aperture. Over 7 inches.
The price is still outrageous, of course. So I think I'll stick with an 8" SCT.
In fact, even a 7" Questar would be cheaper than that, wouldn't it?
I checked. A 7" Questar starts from $8,599.

Also, brand new 180mm apochromats from TEC are available for about $24,000.

Neither of which match the AP. I've had two Q7s. Very good telescopes.

cost.

Neither of which match the AP.True, I'm sure the Astro-Physics apochromat is a very high quality
telescope. Even so, with 8 hours left in the auction, there have been
no bids.
Which, to me, isn't all that surprising. While a 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain
of Chinese make isn't nearly the equal of an apochromat, it's still a good telescope optically - and vastly cheaper. The small increment in quality
is worth the much higher cost only to a very few.
A Maksutov-Cassegrain - besides being available in the 7-inch size, thus facilitating direct comparison - is, of course, a convenient sealed tube,
and compact, hence offering many of the same benefits as an apo,
as compared to an even cheaper Newtonian.

I've had 2 Meade 12" LX200's. About 4% of the time, it would outdo the AP on planets. On deepsky, it would beat it all the time.

is affected by seeing. The trick with planets, of course, is to learn
to catch the moments of good seeing. The 12" scope will always produce
higher resolution views of the planets than the 7" one. But it's easy
to be fooled by the periods between clear views where seeing issues
arise.
