I have just read the book "New Zealand's Hidden Past" by Ross Wiseman >p.Discovery Press, Auckland, October 2001.

Wiseman followed up on a slip that occurred at Mt.Tauhara near Lake Taupo
    in
the 1970's. The slip uncovered some drawings that had been carved into
    the
    rock face.

Investigation disclosed that some of the drawings were maps which
    disclosed
that there were six settlements in the North of the North Island.

Similar rock drawings have been found at each of the six settlements and >they include two world maps that include New Zealand, Australia, Africa
    and
the Southern part of the European Continent including India.

The map is not drawn accurately to scale, (New Zealand is as big as >Australia and Africa) but it is instantly recognisable for what it is.

How did he date it? The Tauhara drawings had been covered by the Taupo >eruption of 186 AD and some of the drawings exposed to the weather would >have taken 2300 years to erode as much as they have. In addition, the
    map
of New Zealand shows Lake Taupo as it was before the eruption in 186 AD.

Does any body have any information that supports or rubbish's his
    findings?

    Has anyone read the book?

Would you believe it? I've just had "Pre-Tasman Explorers" and "New Zealand's Hidden Past" given to me for my birthday. I have a heap of
books ahead of them in the queue but I'll tell you what I think when
    I've read them.
Mine was given to me by my son for Xmas.
There are photographs of some of the inscriptions which were discussed
in the thread following your enquiry. I must say, none of them are
natural. I have no idea of hold they really are - they could have been carved the day of the photograoh for all I know.
Yes, the dating of individual engravings needs more work.
    There is no
photograph of map of Australia so we only have his drawing to go by.
He claims to have reproduced the engravings by making a silicon moulds directly off the rock face.
I'm more than somewhat sceptical of what I've seen of his Phoenecian theories. I suspect he only used them because he knew of nothing better.
I take the Phoenician stuff with a grain of salt, mainly because I don't
know anything about the Phoenician culture.
If the engravings are real, they certainly open up some interesting possibilities.
I passed through Taupo the other day, unfortunately Perry Fletcher was not home so I did not get too talk to him.
